The Zen Master's Dance

A Series of 5 Tuesday classes September 16 - October 14. 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Taught by Shindō Neely Atkinson.

The Zen Master’s Dance: A Guide to Understanding Dōgen and Who You Are in the Universe

Eihei Dogen is the most important philosopher and teacher in the Zen tradition and one of the most important in all of Buddhism.

Dogen was educated in the courtly literary and poetic tradition of Medieval Japan. He was well versed in the Buddhist sutras. His writings are subtle and erudite with numerous references to ancient sources and are often intimidating to students.

But what if there is another side to Dogen? What if he is so well versed in the tradition that he is free to play with it, to dance in it, to give a Zen jazz performance? What if, when we approach Dogen, we could just lighten up a bit and maybe even laugh? This is the question explored by Jundo Cohen in his book The Zen Master’s Dance.

You are invited to join us and maybe we can all dance together.

Classes are in person with a hybrid compenent.  All those with a dedicated meditation practice are welcome.

Shindō Neely Atkinson is a Zen Priest. He is a member of the Houston Zen Center (HZC). He received ordination and the Dharma Name: Shindō Shozan. Heart of the Way / Auspicious Mountain.
