The Essential Dōgen
This course will take place online, through a zoom link that will be provided after registration.
Although we often hear about the teachings of Eihei Dōgen, the founder of Soto Zen in Japan, it can be daunting to approach his writings.
This course explores the fundamental questions that motivated Dōgen's approach to practice and guides participants through Dōgen's writings on these subjects.
Each week of this four week series will focus on a specific question using fascicles (chapters) from Dōgen's Shobogenzo.
Week 1: Who are we and why do we sit zazen?
Buddha Nature
Actualizing the Fundamental Point
Week 2 : What is our relationship to the natural world and how do we nurture it?
Valley Sounds, Mountain Colors
Mountains and Waters Sutra
Week 3: What is Dōgen's vision of Zen practice?
Continuous Practice (parts 1 & 2)
Week 4: How do we practice with relationships and in community?
Only a Buddha and a Buddha
Eight Awakenings of Great Beings
