The Eight Understandings of the Great Person

This class is an exploration of Dōgen Zenji’s teachings on the Eight Understandings of the Great Person, based on the final teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha on the night he entered nirvana:

  1. Having few desires.

  2. Knowing contentment.

  3. Enjoying quietude.

  4. Diligent exertion.

  5. Not neglecting mindfulness.

  6. Practicing meditation.

  7. Cultivating wisdom.

  8. Not engaging in frivolous discourse.

In straightforward and clear prose, Dōgen shows the importance of this gentle teaching. Copies of the text will be provided to the class.

This course is part of the Spring-Summer Practice Period of Every Day Life. It is open to everyone.

All those with a dedicated meditation practice are welcome.

Ryushin is the Shuso/Head Student of the Practice Period. He is a senior member of Houston Zen Center. He received the Bodhisattva Precepts in 2004 and the dharma name: Ryushin Myōjitsu / Dragon Heart, Mystic Reality.
