4 Saturdays, January 4, 11, 25 & February 1. (No class January 18)
10:00 am - 11:00 am. Taught by Meiya Sally Muñoz, Hokyo Louise Dreyfus, and Lynn Murphy.
This class is for second, third and fourth graders, learning how to be present, how to focus on this moment, and how to take this practice home, to continue practicing on their own.
We will explore:
Mindful listening
Mindful breathing
Mindful seeing
Mindful movement
Mindful eating
Mindfulness of thoughts
Mindfulness of emotions
Heartfulness: cultivating positive states such as kindness, generosity and gratitude
We will also use Thich Nhat Hanh’s “pebble practice”, a tangible way to continue our meditation practice using four pebbles representing different images in nature.
While the children are in the class, Louise will be available to meet with their parents. Making time for our own self-care is like “Putting the oxygen mask on first before you can help others.” Successful parenting requires good self-care.
Mindfulness of breath seems so simple and it can be. With this simple practice, we learn to pay attention, calm down, and nurture kindness and compassion that comes from a deeper place.
While your children will be learning these skills, you can also have an opportunity to practice simultaneously in the company of other parents.
Sally Muñoz is a senior member of Houston Zen Center. She teaches third grade at Duchesne Academy, where she has taught for 30 years, and where she has begun a program to teach mindfulness to second, third, and fourth graders.
Louise Dreyfus is one of the founding members of Houston Zen Center and is entrusted as a lay Zen teacher. She has taught Mindfulness for Teens as well as Mindful Parents at the Awty International School.
Lynn Murphy is a member of HZC. She is a child and adult psychotherapist currently in private practice. Previously she has worked at DePelchin Children’s Center, Houston Child Guidance Center and Texas Children’s Hospital as a clinician, supervisor and teacher.
