Cultivating Zen Practice

6 Sundays, May 15 - June 19 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Taught by Sengetsu Tricia McFarlin.

In this six-week class, we’ll explore the practice instructions and poetry of Hongzhi Zhengjue (Tendō Shōgaku), whose teaching of silent illumination inspired generations of Zen students. Hongshi has a wonderful way of using the rich imagery of the natural world to show us the grounding of our practice in the moment-by-moment awareness of our lives. His writings, collected in the book titled Cultivating the Empty Field: The Silent Illumination of Zen Master Hongzhi, are both practical and inspirational, linking present-day Zen students to the Zen ancestors of the past with a broad vision that enables us to realize, as he says, “all beings are our ancestors.”

Tricia McFarlin is a Zen priest and the Shuso/Head monk of the Spring 2022 Intensive Practice Period. She is a former President of the Board of Directors of HZC.

Each class begins with meditation.
