Mind to Mind: The History and Transmission of Zen
This class is an exploration of Zen.
Zen did not appear fully formed—it grew out of the Buddha's original teaching, took shape through centuries of Chinese Chan masters, and traveled through Japan, Korea, and Vietnam before reaching us here.
This course traces that lineage of mind-to-mind transmission, from the historical Buddha to the teachers and traditions that shape our practice today. Along the way, we'll meet the figures and turning points that gave Zen its distinctive character, from the legendary Bodhidharma to the founders of our own tradition.
We will refer to a valuable recent exploration by Barbara O’Brien, The Circle of the Way. It can be purchased from various sources, including the link to Amazon provided here.
