Abbot Gaelyn
The Lotus Sutra. Can be purchased online here.
A series of 6 Thursday Classes July 16 – August 27, 2026
No Class July 30
6:30-8:30 pm. Taught by Abbot Konjin Gaelyn Godwin
The Lotus Sutra is a core scripture of Zen. Its parables and teachings describe a way of being in the world that is wise, compassionate, and beneficial.
The language of the Lotus Sutra is poetic and symbolic, but the teachings themselves are grounded in the real situation of human beings.
This course is for intermediate to advanced practitioners of Zen. It is open to those who have completed the course on the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts, and/or at least one of the Entering the Path of Practice modules.
We will read and discuss the entire sutra using the recent translation of the Lotus Sutra by Michio Shinozaki, B.A. Ziporyn and D.C. Earhart. If you have another translation you would like to bring, that would be welcome.
Zoom participation will also be available. The link will be provided before the class begins.
Abbot Konjin Gaelyn Godwin is the Abiding Teacher of Houston Zen Center.
