Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's mind there are few.
Shunryu Suzuki Roshi

Known for his gentle and open approach based on Dōgen’s teachings, Suzuki Roshi (1904-1971) was the founder of San Francisco Zen Center and is one of the most beloved teachers in modern Buddhism.

For fifty-six years, Suzuki Roshi’s classic, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind has been essential reading for anyone wanting to better understand their mind. These teachings offer everyone a way to navigate life with clarity and openness. All we need is the right attitude, the right understanding, and a determination to practice.

Included in this four-week class are discussions of Suzuki Roshi’s teachings about:

Zazen Posture: The physical basics of seated meditation, breathing, and body alignment.

Core Philosophy: Practical ways to cultivate an open, empty mind free of expert arrogance and preconceptions.

Daily Awareness: Translating seated practice into mindful, everyday life

Each class begins with a period of meditation followed by a presentation and discussion. The class is open to everyone. It is a topic appropriate for all levels of practice experience.

The text Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Suzuki Roshi is available on line as well as at Houston Zen Center.
