5 Saturday classes: February 15-March 7, March 28 10:30 am - noon
At a Japanese calligraphy class, you will be introduced to the basics of shodo, the way of the brush. The teacher will teach you some basic kanji characters and how to write your name in Japanese katakana. The teacher will also explain the three writing systems - kanji, hiragana and katakana — that make up Japanese script.
Japanese calligraphy has often been linked to Zen thought. Perhaps that is because when creating a work, the calligrapher has one chance for each sheet of paper. The brush strokes cannot be corrected. Each work is a reflection of the writer’s state of mind at a moment in time.
Aiko Hayashi is an artist and calligrapher. For more information, please contact Zen Art Calligraphy.
The class is open to a maximum of 10 people, ages 10 and over. Students should dress appropriately for class: do not wear clothes that might be damaged or smudged by the sumi ink. Students might wish to wear an old shirt, T-shirt, or artist’s smock.
Materials are provided.
The class is now full, but you can email Joy to have your name put on the waiting list.
Thanks for your interest! We hope to schedule another class later this year.
