We are grateful for the generous support of members and friends who contributed to the 2018 Year End Appeal. We are pleased to report that all of the proposed projects have been fully funded and most are already underway!
1. Assistant Priest Position: We are happy to share that there was an enthusiastic response to our request for help to employ our new half-time assistant priest. This valuable new position is now fully funded for the year. We are delighted to welcome Rev. Gyōzan Royce Johnson into this position. He is already making so many wonderful contributions to our Zen Center community.
2. Plumbing Renovation Project: We have already finished replacing the galvanized water pipes in the carriage house. The carriage house (built in 1918, renovated in 1946) had old galvanized water pipes that had lost their integrity. We have replaced all the old pipes. We are committed to continuing to take good care of our beautiful historic buildings.
3. Palm Tree Replacement: After a service of remembrance and gratitude for the trees, during which we made offerings to them in honor of the homes they provided for the birds, squirrels and many smaller creatures, and the shade they made for the humans, we removed the palm trees that were lost in the freeze in 2017. Thank you for your donations to plant new trees when the weather permits.
4. New Temple Bell: We have also received funding for a new temple bell, so the work can now commence on having a new bell cast for the Center. Final approval for this important project will be given by the Board in the coming months.
We are all so grateful and inspired by your generosity, that is, the generosity of the friends and members of Houston Zen Center. We are off to a wonderful start to 2019!
With palms together,
Laura Salazar-Hopps, President of HZC
